[0:13]bismillah [Music] [Applause] [Music] so foreign [Music] [Music] oh foreign for the
[2:18]hastening of the reappearance of the master the savior the avenger muhammad
[2:33][Music] one of the most dangerous and detrimental vices that could completely
[2:54]derail a believer's pursuit of the pleasure and satisfaction of the imam
[3:02]of his or her time in other words one of the worst
[3:11]vices that many people suffer from is to be indecisive and be
[3:20]weak and feeble undetermined in arabic the word to describe this kind
[3:31]of vice this state of mind this condition is one and one
[3:36]simply means weakness you look at a guy and you can tell
[3:43]that he spends [Music] endless hours at the gym and there's nothing
[3:52]wrong in being physically strong if you can avoid falling into haram
[3:56]in the process and we know what gyms are like with all
[4:03]the music and the gender mixing and all that sort of stuff
[4:07]and yet somehow people enter this kind of environment and in their
[4:14]minds they justify it by saying that allah subhanahu wa ta'ala allah
[4:25]loves those that are strong but let's not use that as justification
[4:32]to commit acts of sin that's not to say that there is
[4:37]anything wrong with being physically powerful but the reality is that even
[4:48]though this person can lift some serious weight but they'll be the
[4:53]weakest when lifting themselves up from bed to prey they'll be the
[4:59]weakest and i'm not stereotyping i'm just saying generally speaking people are
[5:03]like that they'll be the weakest when it comes to making decisive
[5:12]decisions strategic choices in their lives are abandoned or procrastinated because they
[5:22]simply lack the courage to take those decisions to do the right
[5:27]thing the right thing that they know to be good or to
[5:33]avoid something that they know to be wrong and immoral they'll have
[5:39]the weakest characters unfortunately because they suffer from the condition of being
[5:46]indecisive weak feeble wohen one of the attributes of the companions of
[5:57]imam al-hussein and the noble companions of the but of course this
[6:04]attribute was perfectly epitomized by the companions of abba abdullah hussain on
[6:11]the plains of karbala is that they were not weak they had
[6:17]the courage to do the right thing at the right time no
[6:21]matter the circumstances in fact in this era we read the following
[6:31]technique i bear witness that you never showed any sign of weakness
[6:42]means you never turned away you didn't turn away from your obligation
[6:48]you didn't turn away from your imam of the time you didn't
[6:52]turn away from your responsibility not a single shred of weakness was
[6:58]exhibited by the companions of imam al-hussein now who is a weak
[7:11]person i like to refer to this group of people now it
[7:13]may include me it may include people out there it's easy if
[7:20]you know what you're looking for to spot signs of this weakness
[7:23]that we're about to talk about tonight but i like to call
[7:30]them beta believers as opposed to alpha believers an alpha believer is
[7:36]decisive it's like the companions of imam al-hussein they'll do the right
[7:42]thing no matter their ambiance their environment their circumstances a beta believer
[7:49]on the other hand is someone who reads the room and makes
[7:56]decisions based on what others think they'll react in other words usually
[8:02]these are people who are reactionary in nature they'll first look around
[8:08]and see what other people are doing what other people are doing
[8:11]and so they'll swim with the current they'll go with the flow
[8:17]they will never take initiative they'll never be the first to do
[8:25]the right thing they're happy being the second third fourth maybe they'll
[8:29]be all the way at the end of the queue but to
[8:33]do the right thing and be the one who breaks the taboo
[8:36]who initiates the chain of reaction they'll never be that person why
[8:45]because they don't have the courage to do it they don't have
[8:48]the bravery to make those decisions at the split second window that's
[8:53]presented to them now these mind you these split-second windows aren't confined
[8:59]to being in the battlefield they're not confined to when the imam
[9:04]comes and calls for help these are things that we experience on
[9:09]a daily basis but on a small scale there'll be a split-second
[9:14]window as to whether you will go this way or that way
[9:16]whether you will accept your friend's invite to doing something that's fishy
[9:24]at the very least if not completely haram or choosing to say
[9:27]no i'm not going to do this because it's hard it's extremely
[9:30]difficult if you suffer from this condition it's extremely difficult to say
[9:38]no to a friend to say no to a neighbor to say
[9:42]no point blank but that's who they are beta believers they will
[9:47]always swim with the current as opposed to doing the right thing
[9:52]even if they happen to be the only person to do that
[9:55]one of their characteristics is they procrastinate they put off making those
[10:03]major life decisions that they know to be good they put them
[10:06]off and i'm not just talking about putting off submitting your assignment
[10:10]to the last minute i'm talking about putting off and procrastinating on
[10:16]fulfilling your obligations towards allah or on abandoning this sinful habit you
[10:27]know the classic example of i'm not ready to wear hijab just
[10:32]yet maybe one day when i go to hajj when i do
[10:34]this when i do that as though there is something that you
[10:37]need to prepare in advance you need to do something before you
[10:42]make the choice to put on the hijab or i'm not ready
[10:45]to pray just yet i'm not ready to go to hajj just
[10:49]yet i'm not ready to do ziada just yet this i'm not
[10:53]ready type of mentality is grounded in procrastination and procrastination is is
[10:59]one of the attributes of those people who are weak in their
[11:04]character they don't want to do the right thing because that requires
[11:08]courage and the reason they procrastinate is because they want to escape
[11:14]their reality because facing reality and responding to these questions requires a
[11:21]degree of bravery not a whole lot but just to be free
[11:28]to be free from the pressures of society to be free from
[11:34]being shackled by the opinions of people around you opinions imagine most
[11:40]of the time we do things not because we don't want to
[11:48]face verbal criticism by society but because we're shackled by electrical synapses
[11:56]in their brains we don't want to be seen as an outsider
[12:02]by the people around us in other words we're afraid of what
[12:07]what they might think about us not what they might do to
[12:11]us nobody's going to kill you if you wear hijab in this
[12:15]country nobody is going to hurt you or even curse you if
[12:18]you pray and the time is tight your salat is becoming and
[12:24]the only place you have to pray is by the side of
[12:27]the road where it's safe or in the park nobody's going to
[12:30]do anything to you but we're afraid of what they might think
[12:34]as they walk past us look at the weakness look at the
[12:38]feebleness wallahi brothers and sisters sometimes i see adherents and followers of
[12:46]other religions in particular jews and you can't help but feel inspired
[12:50]by how much they hold on to their faith no matter what
[12:55]you say or think or do they'll do what they know to
[13:00]be true and right they'll follow their religion irrespective and in and
[13:06]regardless of people's opinions and ideas they don't couldn't care less because
[13:10]they believe this to be their religion their obligations as per the
[13:15]instructions of the talmud for instance and yet you look at our
[13:22]community i look at myself i apologize my community is way better
[13:25]than me but i look at my own self and wonder why
[13:30]the weakness why this beta believer mentality that we have where we
[13:37]feel so undetermined and indecisive and weak that i have to always
[13:45]appease [Music] other people's opinions and thoughts so they'll procrastinate one of
[13:53]the attributes of this group of people is that they will do
[13:58][Music] the wrong thing in spite of you advising them against it
[14:05]it's like imagine somebody driving and then their passenger says to them
[14:11]hey i think you're on the wrong road man this is the
[14:15]wrong route but because they don't want to be seen as weak
[14:19]because they don't want to acknowledge their mistake they'll keep at it
[14:23]they'll keep driving down the wrong road and find a sneaky way
[14:28]to get back on the right track if that if that how
[14:34]many people have fallen because they don't want to ask for directions
[14:38]how many and i'm not just talking about driving i'm talking about
[14:43]the ones who are too proud to ask a scholar is the
[14:49]way i'm doing right or wrong is the way that i pray
[14:53]my salat right or wrong because they feel i'm too old at
[14:58]this point if i ask somebody and i'm 27 i'm 34 i'm
[15:01]40 years old i'll feel embarrassed it's awkward but because they don't
[15:08]ask they'll keep doing the wrong thing over and over again it's
[15:11]like the hadith of imam assad who said to one of his
[15:15]companions he said to him how shameful is it that you'd be
[15:19]60 70 years old and you still don't know how to pray
[15:22]you still don't know the basics of your religion because they're too
[15:29]proud because they're too arrogant there's a reason why you have the
[15:33]brake pedal and the reverse gear so that if you make a
[15:37]mistake you simply turn around you should feel proud that you corrected
[15:42]a mistake you shouldn't feel embarrassed you shouldn't feel humiliated i made
[15:46]a mistake that's why most of us find it so difficult to
[15:50]say sorry to each other that's why so many marriages fall apart
[15:54]because the wife or the husband or both they are too arrogant
[16:00]and proud to say sorry to each other even though they know
[16:04]they made a mistake they know they've hurt their partner brothers and
[16:11]sisters you make a mistake simply acknowledge it just say you're sorry
[16:16]you'd be amazed how much that short simple word can restore the
[16:22]love and harmony in your life whether it be in a marriage
[16:26]or in a friendship or in the context of the wider community
[16:31]because words can hurt you need to measure every syllable that rolls
[16:37]down your tongue because you can burn bridges you can cause irreparable
[16:46]irreversible harm and damage to your relationship and before you know it
[16:50]they're fighting each other in court bickering over who gets what why
[16:55]because the guy or the woman was too proud to say sorry
[17:01]one too many times why offering apologies as well as accepting someone's
[17:21]apology is a sign of the intellect that you should accept the
[17:29]apology because it works both ways right it takes so much courage
[17:31]for someone to say they're sorry but then when the recipient of
[17:38]the apology finds themselves in a position of strength that's when they
[17:41]try that's when the arrogance kicks in as well where they don't
[17:46]want to acknowledge they don't want to accept the apology because they
[17:48]want to rub it in because they feel they've been wronged and
[17:53]hurt so much they can't just say okay i accept your apology
[17:55]so the imam says that if someone offers you an apology you
[18:00]must accept it even if you know that they don't mean it
[18:07]because sometimes they'll be like no you don't mean it you have
[18:12]to mean it but just accept the apology it took so much
[18:15]from them to apologize to say they're sorry just accept it help
[18:21]them mean it [Applause] once again says that if somebody comes comes
[18:29]up to you and insults you in your right ear ten times
[18:33]then they turn around to your left ear and say i'm sorry
[18:38]accept it from them in other words there are so many reasons
[18:40]why you'd you'd be right to think that they don't mean it
[18:45]there are so many reasons why you would be right to say
[18:48]hang on a second you can't just insult me ten times to
[18:52]my face and then say you're sorry and i have to accept
[18:54]it the imam says you must accept it and so the hubris
[19:00]the arrogance the procrastination all of these are signs of a weak
[19:07]character of a feeble individual these beta believers stop it it's not
[19:12]worth it all these fights all this bickering that happens between husbands
[19:15]and wives and parents and children and believing brothers and sisters are
[19:19]not worth it we're at a time brothers and sisters where we
[19:27]need to come together as a community as the imam of our
[19:33]time says [Music] these are the actual words of god's proof in
[19:44]our lives in this world to a sheikh mufid he says if
[19:48]only our followers may allah back them may allah give them the
[19:54]support to do the right thing to obey us to follow us
[19:56]if they were united in honoring their commitment to us then they
[20:03]would meet us then we would come to save them and to
[20:09]bring them relief sooner rather than later and so this infighting this
[20:17]bickering these vicious conflicts especially personal problems if i disassociate from someone
[20:25]because they happen to backstab the imam of my time or because
[20:28]they've left the fold of the shayla that's a whole other thing
[20:31]if i find them to be weakening the community of the followers
[20:40]of the other bait that's another thing but these personal problems they
[20:43]have to come to an end in fact be the bigger person
[20:48]and apologize to the one who doesn't talk to you even though
[20:50]this is according to our hadith even if you know that they
[20:56]were wrong and that you never made a mistake but take the
[20:58]initiative and believe me allah will reward you for that allah will
[21:02]give you the kind of tawfiq that you couldn't imagine to get
[21:07]just by yourself because you took that initiative and you apologized to
[21:12]your believing brother or sister and ended that conflict which goes on
[21:15]and on for no good reason just say you're sorry that's all
[21:23]it takes but as i said this is one of the attributes
[21:27]of these people who are weak they keep putting things off they
[21:34]keep procrastinating you know that this is haram listening to all of
[21:40]this poisonous garbage that feeds you ideas and beliefs that completely erode
[21:48]your commitment to the imam of your time i'm not just talking
[21:53]about the music but the songs and their content contents themselves they
[21:57]eat away at our faith stop it just say you're sorry say
[22:05]you're sorry to allah say you're sorry to the imam of your
[22:09]time be brave enough to throw it all out delete the app
[22:12]delete the songs that you've purchased or you've downloaded or whatever it
[22:19]is do the right thing if you find yourself struggling with salat
[22:23]be brave enough to simply start tonight with me just stand in
[22:31]the direction of the qibla and say allahu akbar that's all allah
[22:36]wants from you it takes a few minutes a day but be
[22:41]brave enough to defy the shaytan to defy the society to defy
[22:50]all the garbage that's out there all the different ideologies that push
[22:54]you in different directions just put all that behind you and say
[22:58]allahu akbar allah is greater than all of that because at the
[23:05]end of it all we keep procrastinating and saying one day but
[23:10]that day never comes and how do you know whether that day
[23:13]will come whether you'll make it to that stage in your life
[23:18]where you're ready quote unquote how do you know that amir al-mu'manin
[23:26]says he says don't be fooled by this false hope that one
[23:36]day i'll be ready one day i'll do this one day i'll
[23:41]do that so many people never made it to that day that
[23:45]they filled all the graveyards and cemeteries one of the things i'd
[23:51]like to do whenever i visit a new city or town or
[23:56]country is i go to the local cemetery there are three places
[23:59]in fact that i advise everyone to visit as much as you
[24:04]can and whenever you go to these three places you will always
[24:08]come back a different person you'll feel more content more satisfied more
[24:13]thankful you'll feel happier in your own life one of them is
[24:20]graveyards cemeteries because you remember that you're going to be one of
[24:25]those people that maybe someone will decide to visit but you're going
[24:27]to join them sooner or later emile moment was coming back from
[24:32]the battle of jamal when he came to kufa meaning al-ashraf where
[24:42]he was eventually buried and he came across [Music] when he got
[24:48]to those graves he addressed them listen to what the imam said
[24:51]he said o people of those terrifying homes the graves o people
[25:06]who dwell in these graves that are empty no one's with them
[25:14]they're all alone lonely places then the imam said oh people of
[25:26]loneliness oh people of dirt oh people of terrifying conditions he said
[25:47]i'm giving you news of what's happening here in this world because
[25:50]you've already crossed the bridge into the next you don't know what's
[25:55]going on here well let me tell you your homes now have
[25:57]new people living in them these precious places that you looked after
[26:03]that you worked your entire life to paying off that mortgage someone
[26:08]else is living in those homes now someone else has moved into
[26:12]your bedrooms and living rooms and kitchens your spouses have remarried and
[26:20]moved on your money was distributed and it's gone this is our
[26:28]news will tell us tell us what you think tell us about
[26:32]the world that you live in then the imam looked at his
[26:36]companions he said if they could speak they would say the following
[26:42]they would say that the best thing to carry with you into
[26:47]this world is piety none of that matters none of that holds
[26:53]any weight piety fear of allah refraining from sin and fulfilling your
[26:58]religious obligations that's all that matters that's the only currency that you
[27:02]need in the world of the baraz how do you know you'll
[27:08]have enough time to do the right thing how do you know
[27:11]whether that day will come when allah warns us when death descends
[27:20]upon you and stretches its claws into your soul to extract it
[27:25]at that point what happens everybody will respond in the same way
[27:32]no one is an exception my lord send me back give me
[27:44]just one more day give me just one more hour give me
[27:49]just a few minutes to do the right thing so that i
[27:53]could do that one thing i always put off i always procrastinated
[27:58]on the angel of death will say to them there is going
[28:10]to be a very long stay on this bridge that connects this
[28:15]world and the next but you'll never coming back has beautiful lines
[28:21]of poetry in which he says he speaks about those who are
[28:31]fooled by the mirage of that one day that will come the
[28:36]one day i will do this and i'll do that and i'll
[28:39]stop doing this right he says you're busy with your life you're
[29:03]busy with work you're busy with play you're busy with all of
[29:06]these things saying one day this one day that right death always
[29:11]comes without a warning even those people who are sick even those
[29:17]with stage four cancer even those who are terminal and they've been
[29:23]told by their doctors that you're gonna die when death actually comes
[29:26]to them they'll think it's too soon i've seen it i've experienced
[29:30]it with people close to me they know they're dying their doctors
[29:34]have already warned them but when death actually comes they'll be like
[29:39]i thought there's going to be another month or two or a
[29:43]couple of weeks at least right the box that carries all you
[29:56]need is your grave and it's your actions it's your intentions it's
[30:00]all of these things so my point in this is let's not
[30:06]procrastinate we have come to a place my dear brothers and sisters
[30:10]where we're ready to board the ark of salvation this is the
[30:18]description of imam al-hussein given to us by rasulullah i saw an
[30:26]inscription on the foot of god's throne when he this when he
[30:36]ascended to the heavens in the mirage the prophet said i saw
[30:40]this inscription i saw this engraving what is it was is a
[30:52]lantern of guidance you want to know what the right thing to
[30:57]do is just ask yourself this question what would imam al-hussein do
[31:00]it's very simple if you're ever confused if you're ever unsure about
[31:06]which direction to take this question usually revives your moral compass what
[31:13]would imam al-hussein do in this circumstance board the ark of salvation
[31:23]so if we're going to change course if we're going to turn
[31:30]around if we are going to do the right thing and have
[31:34]the bravery to stop that sin to do this swajib this is
[31:38]the place to do it this is the place to make that
[31:43]commitment to make that choice because with imam al-hussein and his ark
[31:48]approaching you the wave pulls you to him in other words you
[31:50]have this divine backing now any other time throughout the year any
[31:54]other month any other season you don't have that divine backing now
[32:00]you do now you have the name of imam al-hussein you have
[32:02]the flame of imam al-hussein you have the energy of imam al-hussein
[32:06]pulling you toward his ark and he's got his arm stretched right
[32:14]out waiting for people to say come and save me let me
[32:19]be the one that you want me to be let me at
[32:22]least take a step in the right direction in the direction of
[32:27]the companions of imam al-hussein the imam wallahi i swear in the
[32:31]honor and the name of the imam of our time if you
[32:35]make that commitment imam al-hussein will help you and whatever challenges have
[32:38]stopped you from making those commitments have prevented you from doing the
[32:44]right thing they will be a lot easier to overcome he will
[32:49]help you but you have to at least make that promise you
[32:53]have to make the commitment you can't just wait for one day
[32:57]that one day is today it's tonight we're right in the middle
[33:03]of this season this is night five of a ten night journey
[33:07]towards imam al-hussein if you haven't made a commitment to please the
[33:14]imam of your time tonight's the night to do it you need
[33:18]to be strong let me give you a couple of examples was
[33:28]a unique caliber of a human being let me tell you something
[33:34]about him so who was one of the incredibly devoted companions of
[33:42]amir al-mu'min and later encountered imam hussein on his way to karbala
[33:49]i'll leave his story for another time but was someone who had
[33:56]exhibited incredible strength of character in defense of the truth and in
[34:01]defending his master and his mawla amir al-mu'manin there was an encounter
[34:07]between him and muawiyah which is worth a read if you can
[34:13]look it up where he goes to muawiyah completely humiliates muawiyah with
[34:18]his approach but i'm skipping through all of that because i want
[34:22]to mention something that he said to muawiyah listen this is the
[34:29]before the battle of safin he said go tell ali that i
[34:34]am sending him so many soldiers i am filling the battlefield with
[34:39]what he called khardell gardel is what's called mustard seed and mustard
[34:45]seed if you've ever seen it it's one of the tiniest seeds
[34:50]it's about a millimeter in diameter so it's very very small maui
[34:53]said i am bringing so many people to fight with him that
[34:57]they will be like and they will gobble up the water of
[35:03]the river tigris and they can then spit it back into the
[35:05]river euphrates in other words he's describing the sheer military prowess that
[35:11]he's bringing to the battle but the description he uses is mustard
[35:17]seeds i will fill the plains with these tiny mustard seeds all
[35:23]of these thousands upon thousands of soldiers responded to malawi he said
[35:28]to him okay well there is something you haven't thought about something
[35:33]you've forgotten which is that let's not talk about him for a
[35:39]second you don't need ali he has deacon esther he has this
[35:47]rooster called malik and this rooster is going to pick all of
[35:50]these tiny little seeds of yours and then store them in his
[35:55]gizzard and then go and feed his soldiers with it in other
[35:59]words one thing is going to destroy you and your entire army
[36:05]you've forgotten to factor him into your equation malik was someone that
[36:13]amir al-mu'manin describes like this he says he is more severe on
[36:18]the fujaar min he is more severe on the evil doers than
[36:26]a menacing flame his strength was legendary he was someone who was
[36:33]above and beyond even the closest confidance of amir al-mu'manin malik the
[36:40]imam himself says he says he was like a mountain malik was
[36:45]someone that the imam sent to egypt and he said in his
[36:49]letter of appointment as the governor of egypt he said to the
[36:52]people that you should follow him because everything he tells you is
[36:56]a commandment from me if he says to you you should fight
[37:00]then you should fight because i am saying so he's a spokesperson
[37:04]for ali this was and yet the strength of malik isn't found
[37:12]on the battlefield of jamal and safin the strength of maelic the
[37:21]bravery the courage of malikip malik is found when he's walking in
[37:28]the streets of kufa and this group of kids these delinquent little
[37:34]teenagers they try to play games and so one of them grabs
[37:37]a handful of dirt he makes a ball with it and throws
[37:41]it on the back of malik when malek turns around these kids
[37:45]realize that they've just messed with the wrong person this is the
[37:53]top lieutenant of amir al-mu'min this is the talk of the town
[37:58]this is the icon this is malik al-ashtar himself they all begin
[38:02]to shiver saying we're all dead malik keeps going the kid runs
[38:09]after malik and he notices that he walks into a mosque you
[38:12]must have heard the story he runs after him begging him he
[38:18]falls to his feet malik says what happened he said i was
[38:20]the one who threw that dirt on your back malik said well
[38:24]that's why i'm here because i've already forgiven you but i came
[38:27]to this masjid so i could pray two units of prayer and
[38:31]ask allah for your forgiveness as well that is strength of character
[38:36]that's someone who's able to curb his desires he was able to
[38:43]tame that beast within was able to do the right thing at
[38:47]the right time because ultimately brothers and sisters before i transition into
[38:52]the masaab which of the knights of muharram tonight tonight's remembrance and
[39:03]commemoration is truly near to my heart at the end of the
[39:08]day you and i are special you and i have this rank
[39:13]a status in the eyes of allah subhanahu wa ta'ala that we
[39:17]have to maintain there's a man by the name of ash he
[39:22]was a shia but he was a delinquent shia he was a
[39:25]rebellious shia he was a sinful shia he used to drink now
[39:34]can you be both sinful and a follower of the imam of
[39:41]your time the answer is yeah because at the end of the
[39:45]day if i am sinful if i commit all these acts of
[39:50]disobedience against allah subhanahu wa ta'ala it doesn't mean that i should
[39:53]turn my back to the majalis of abba it doesn't mean that
[39:59]that gives me cause to say you know what i'll throw the
[40:03]baby out with the bath water who cares about religion look at
[40:05]me look at my actions look at my lifestyle if anything we
[40:11]come to these majalis in order to change we come to the
[40:14]gatherings held in honor of hussain so that we fix those flaws
[40:18]and these problems in our lives we come here to say we're
[40:23]sorry we come here to apologize to the imam of the time
[40:26]and turn around and actually make our lives in accordance with his
[40:30]wishes so this man shachrani used to drink one day there's an
[40:37]encounter between him and imam al-qadam alaihis-salam he meets the imam and
[40:44]i don't want to get into the story but the encounter happens
[40:48]he says the imam walked up to me he didn't tell me
[40:53]why are you committing all of these sins what's wrong with you
[40:55]he didn't say you're going to go to hell look at the
[40:59]way the imam treated this person and how he nudged him in
[41:02]the right direction he said to him something that we should a
[41:12]good deed is a good deed no matter who does it you
[41:16]can be an atheist but the good deed itself is still good
[41:23]even if the person doing it isn't but when you do it
[41:30]it's even better [Music] this is the bid that hurts at least
[41:38]it should he said when an evil act a sinful act is
[41:44]ugly and hideous and disgusting no matter who does it but it's
[41:49]worse when you do it it's worse when the hajj and the
[41:55]hajja do it it's worse when the hussain commits that act it's
[41:59]worse when the one who wears hijab does it it's worse than
[42:02]when the one who prays and who has a beard and who
[42:08]keeps the appearance of a believer does it the imam then explains
[42:15]why he says because you're one of us you're connected to us
[42:22]because you're a shia of imam al-mahdi you're a follower of the
[42:29]12th imam so when you do it it's just so much more
[42:31]hurtful so much worse tonight is a night of seeking forgiveness because
[42:43]the greatest act of repentance perhaps took place and it's being commemorated
[42:53]tonight and so don't be ashamed of saying to your imam i'm
[42:59]sorry for as the children of yahoo told their father they said
[43:06]ask allah to forgive us i know i'm not worthy i know
[43:12]i don't deserve to be forgiven i know i don't even know
[43:17]how to apologize for what i've done but maybe you can do
[43:22]it for us by asking you perhaps allah will forgive our sins
[43:30]he was standing in the enemy camp he didn't think that they
[43:38]would actually go through with it he actually thought that this was
[43:44]about putting pressure on imam al-hussein cornering him the imam will then
[43:48]give his pledge of allegiance to yazid and everybody can go home
[43:53]he didn't think that there was going to be a battle that
[43:56]people would be killed that the son of the daughter of rasulullah
[44:01]would have 30 000 swords unsheathed in his face he never thought
[44:08]that would it would come down to that but when he looked
[44:12]at the mobilization of the two camps on the day of ashura
[44:16]and he heard um say i want ten horses to be prepared
[44:22]and i want these horses to have new fresh sharp shoes he
[44:29]came and said what's going on are you actually going to fight
[44:35]this man al horrible what a brave man even though you might
[44:41]think it was too late but it's never too late tonight isn't
[44:45]too late no matter who i am no matter what i've done
[44:49]no matter my rap sheet my track record it's never too late
[44:54]but you just have to make that take that step and just
[44:58]say you're sorry you have to say it don't be too proud
[45:04]don't let uberus shackle you just say you're sorry that's all it
[45:09]takes iraqis have this tradition when you go to the shrine of
[45:15]abel abbas or imam hussain or any of the imams in iraq
[45:17]if you look inside the varia you'll find packets of cigarette and
[45:23]some people think like what is this why would somebody throw i
[45:27]mean people give donations to the shrine and whatnot but cigarette and
[45:31]the reason for that is because they're trying to quit so they
[45:36]come and they take that packet and they just throw it inside
[45:41]the shrine and say you know what you take this i'm never
[45:44]smoking ever again.
[45:46]it takes that again pride takes that courage throw it outside throw
[45:54]it to the imam of your time and say enough is enough
[45:58]i'm never doing this again are you actually going to go through
[46:07]with this are these soldiers here to fight responded by saying the
[46:21]least you're going to see today's heads flying and hands falling to
[46:26]the ground he said but why not listen to what he just
[46:39]told you all of these speeches that he gave the sermons all
[46:41]of the solutions that he provided why don't you listen to him
[46:44]he said look if it were up to me maybe but your
[46:49]emir meaning abedillah and yazid they want this to happen they want
[46:56]hussein's head on a lance again his entire life was completely engineered
[47:08]in a different way yes he didn't expect this to happen but
[47:12]he was one of the generals in the army of yazid and
[47:18]muawiyah how could a person like that simply turn around but that's
[47:22]what makes it so special all it takes is a moment a
[47:27]moment of saying i am sorry he says to one of his
[47:31]friends who was standing next to him he said to him don't
[47:34]you want to water your horse he said but i've done that
[47:38]already he said why don't you do it again so his friend
[47:41]realized that probably wanted to make a run for it so he
[47:45]took to the side then he came next to a man by
[47:49]the name of muhajar the narrators of the makta of imam al-hussein
[47:53]describe him like this they say hor was still on the back
[47:57]of his horse contemplating thinking how do you even turn around from
[48:03]something like this when you were the person who cornered imam al-hussein
[48:08]and intercepted his path you did all of this how how do
[48:14]you turn around so he's standing there thinking suddenly he shivers i've
[48:22]never seen you like this what's happening to you if somebody asked
[48:30]me who's the most courageous person in kufa i would never go
[48:33]past you what's happening to you at this point speaks his conscience
[48:39]he says i see myself between heaven and hell and by god
[48:55]i will never choose anything other than heaven even if i get
[49:02]killed come what may then he kicked his horse and ran in
[49:04]the direction of the camp of abba abdullah hussain look at how
[49:10]he approached imam al-hussein he took his boots off he tied them
[49:16]with a lace he wrapped the lace around his neck so his
[49:21]boots were hanging from his shoulders which is a sign of humility
[49:25]humility he then went towards imam al-hussein some of the companions of
[49:32]the imam were telling him we should launch the first attack we
[49:38]should have the advantage of being the first to ambush the enemy
[49:42]but imam al-hussein kept i don't want to be the first person
[49:50]to fight but maybe one of the reasons was that imam al-hussein
[49:53]was still expecting a guest he was expecting hor to come and
[49:56]join his camp when hurricane imam al-hussein asked his companions he said
[50:01]let's go and greet our new guest today imagine allah they all
[50:15]went towards this lonely rider who approached the camp of imam al-hussein
[50:20]his head was lowered like so he was completely filled with shame
[50:29]when he approached the imam he said to him means can i
[50:37]still repent but perhaps what he's asking is will my repentance even
[50:41]be accepted for what i have done i instilled fear in the
[50:53]hearts of the children of rasulullah now the women and children are
[50:57]frightened they're terrified of what will happen to them and it's all
[51:05]my fault will god even accept my apology and my repentance what
[51:09]does imam al-hussein say to him two things have been narrated one
[51:13]the imam saying to him in allah if you are repentant allah
[51:20]has already forgiven you meaning when you took that first step in
[51:23]my direction allah forgave all your sins others have said the imam
[51:31]didn't even say those words he didn't have to he simply said
[51:34]to him raise your head high allahu akbar tonight imam zaman is
[51:41]telling each and every one of us who is repentant who is
[51:46]saying i'm sorry to raise your head high a shia of imam
[51:50]zaman can raise their head high in pride that you have joined
[51:56]the camp of the imam the imam offered him the chance to
[52:00]repent joined imam al-hussein now historians have described how his son also
[52:12]joined him his brother also joined him his slave also joined him
[52:16]but how his brother when he saw his brother move in the
[52:24]direction of imam al-hussein this broke the back of the army of
[52:30]um because the top general switched side to that of imam al-hussein
[52:33]a lot of people were now left wondering what's going to happen
[52:36]the entire army was now in shamble and so they were looking
[52:43]to see what's going to happen hora's brother now needed a way
[52:49]to go and join him but he couldn't simply sneak away they
[52:53]say that he said to his comrades he said look at what
[52:57]my brother has done to us he has brought shame to my
[53:02]house he's brought shame to my tribe let me go and kill
[53:03]him he then runs in his direction and embraces his brother when
[53:08]he gets to him his son was now stuck not knowing what
[53:12]trick he's going to pull from his sleeve what is he going
[53:17]to do so he simply pulls out his sword and he begins
[53:22]to fight those people in his vicinity those around him until he
[53:26]was overpowered overwhelmed and killed his slave did the same thing look
[53:34]at this great example of repentance the companions of imam al-hussein brothers
[53:37]and sisters they show us how you can be strong in your
[53:44]character and in return end up becoming the greatest stars and the
[53:49]galaxy of hussein people that imam assad teaches us that when you
[53:53]visit their grave you should say the following words may my parents
[54:03]be ransomed for you imam assad is speaking about his father the
[54:07]imam and yet he says may they be ransomed for you may
[54:13]they be sacrificed for you why because look at what they did
[54:15]i'll just give you a few examples he says on the day
[54:23]of ashura or you see this dark night you can sneak away
[54:33]easily leave me alone leave me only with my son everybody else
[54:40]can leave you don't have to stay because if they get a
[54:45]hold of me if they kill me then they have no reason
[54:46]to kill you go back to your families what does borah robin
[54:57][Music] that we get the chance to fight between your hands in
[55:20]front of you so that we would be mutilated in your way
[55:24]in other words ya imam hussain we are thankful to allah for
[55:29]our bodies to be completely cut into pieces because this is in
[55:36]your way this is the other is goes out into the field
[55:46]while everyone was either sleeping the women and the children and the
[55:51]companions were resting the imam goes outside to keep watch suddenly he
[55:57]notices with him the imam says who are you he says the
[56:01]imam said yes you are means useful beneficial there was another one
[56:06]on the camp of um he was an enemy combatant but was
[56:13]on a whole other level he comes to the imam the imam
[56:18]said tim do you see how dark it is out there he
[56:22]said yes the imam said why don't you leave me you don't
[56:24]have to stay how does he respond to his master to the
[56:27]imam of his time may the lions and the beasts of the
[56:37]desert eat me alive if i ever think about leaving you how
[56:41]could you say that to me this is another companion another one
[56:47]is this young man who comes to shield imam al-hussein as he
[56:53]prayed on the day of ashura o believers my dear brothers and
[57:00]sisters take your salat seriously imam al-hussein lost two of his loyal
[57:04]companions for the sake of salat on the day of imam hussain
[57:09]was making a point when he prayed out there in public he
[57:14]could have gone to one of the tents to pray inside them
[57:16]but he chose to pray in broad daylight in view of the
[57:23]enemy camp to remind you and i that salat is important that
[57:26]salat is the pillar of our religion the imam stood there to
[57:32]pray one of them these great companions two of them stood to
[57:36]shield the imam from the enemy attacks from the arrows and the
[57:44]uh spears and this rocks and the stones one of them was
[57:48]this young man he stood in front of the imam wakana yatta
[57:57]he would block the arrows with his hands and he would block
[58:04]the spears with his neck why his neck you might think to
[58:07]yourself maybe he could use a shield or something but the reason
[58:12]he used his neck and his chest is because he had to
[58:15]keep a close eye on every approaching spear and so the closest
[58:20]thing to his eye was his chest and his neck by the
[58:25]time abba abdullah hussain finished his salah that man could no longer
[58:30]hold it he could no longer stand he fell to the ground
[58:36]abba abdullah [Applause] was i loyal to you did i fulfill my
[58:52]obligation you will proceed me to paradise yes you have that's another
[59:03]example the other is john this black slave an elderly man he
[59:09]was a slave of abu dhabi he was in his seventies imam
[59:12]al-hussein saw him he used to fix the the blades of the
[59:19]the the swords he was a swordsmith the imam came and he
[59:22]saw that he was getting ready to head into battle the imam
[59:25]said to him when you joined us you came so that you
[59:28]could live with us who wouldn't want to live with abba abdullah
[59:33]you came so that you could live with our family in our
[59:38]homes today is not the day to live today is the day
[59:44]to die you should leave us your old man [Applause] i know
[60:01]that i don't have a noble lineage i know that my skin
[60:07]is black i know that i don't deserve to be among those
[60:09]who get killed defending you voila give me the honor give me
[60:19]the privilege don't turn me away at this point he said this
[60:21]to the imam the imam said may allah bless you he headed
[60:26]into the battlefield he fought even at his old age until he
[60:31]was killed they say that for days and weeks after that there
[60:36]was this most beautiful fragrance that flowed from where he had been
[60:45]killed finally i want to mention islam this turkish slave who also
[60:51]joined the camp of imam al-hussein this man he went into battle
[60:56]he fought and fought and fought until he fell to the ground
[61:00]imam al-hussein tried to make it to every single one of his
[61:04]companions so that if they were still alive the last thing they
[61:10]would see is his beautiful face the face of the son of
[61:15]fatima so he hurried towards him but then at some point this
[61:20]turkish slave opened his eyes to see the cheek of abba abdullah
[61:24]resting on his cheek what did he say he said men mithli
[61:29]is there anyone like me allah nobody is like me how lucky
[61:41]am i that the son of the daughter of rasulullah has his
[61:46]cheek leaning against my cheek imam al-hussein bit this man farewell like
[61:53]this which is the same thing he did to his son now
[61:58]i say to you oh believers that whenever one of his companions
[62:13]fell to the ground that he was there next to them when
[62:19]they died and left this world they had the privilege of imam
[62:26]al-hussein being next to them comforting them helping them but who was
[62:31]there when the imam himself fell to his eyes only to see
[62:50]shimmer beneath the ocean sitting on his chest allah i shall zayn
[63:19]of calling out leave my brother alone get off of that chest
[63:28]i just [Applause] foreign okay [Music] jose la hussain
