[7:40]be reciting the saga of Ashura to commemorate the to commemorate the

[7:44]Day of Ashura the English program will begin at 9:00 a.m.

[7:46]sharp with Samaha sayyed muhammad baka Sweeney and the Arabic program will

[7:51]begin at 10:00 a.m.

[7:54]sharp with Simha had Sayed Hassan fellini please try to carpool as

[7:58]much as possible for Tuesday morning's program as parking spots will fill

[8:02]up fast and be limited also the my C's last night for

[8:07]this year's Muharram program will be tomorrow night at 7 p.m.

[8:18]the NYC will be presenting the martyrs tale a reenactment of the

[8:24]events that took place in Karbala all are welcome to attend make

[17:45]official slavery but there is one type of enslavement that human being

[17:53]have not brought an end to it is an enslavement that we

[18:00]all experience that we all struggle with throughout our lives it's the

[18:07]enslavement of this materialistic world you find that the words of an

[18:13]imam and hussain ali in salaam ring in our ears every single

[18:17]year for 14 centuries these words have moved millions of people the

[18:26]mammaries salaam states in a nasa a beaded duniya people are the

[18:30]slaves of this world they're in slaves by the materialistic aspect of

[18:41]many people are really committed to their religion it's superficial they say

[18:49]they are religious but when Allah puts them to the trial you

[18:53]find that those who are really committed to the path of God

[18:59]or a few indeed that's the struggle that we all go through

[19:04]my dear brothers and sisters three nights ago we examined what basura

[19:08]is that intellectual and spiritual insight we examined two methods that developed

[19:17]the Messiah for us the first was knowledge through knowledge you achieved

[19:24]that enlightenment of the soul the heart and the mind and the

[19:32]second is avoiding sins sinful lifestyles sinful habits we spoke about the

[19:38]role of these two important ingredients and factors when it comes to

[19:44]developing our basura tonight my dear brothers and sisters I would like

[19:49]to share with you two critical important factors that further develop our

[19:58]Messiah our intellectual insight our spiritual insight on such a night if

[20:04]you want to appreciate the legacy of man who same salawatullahi Ali

[20:11]it is through these two factors that we develop that light that

[20:16]an imam husain Hani Salaam brought for Humanity for he is the

[20:21]torch of guidance who shows us the way to allah subhanaw taala

[20:26]the way to success the way to preparing for our hereafter the

[20:30]first of these key ingredients that we will discuss tonight is being

[20:37]attached to this materialistic world and the second is our relationship with

[20:43]the Imam of our time this is a very important lesson that

[20:47]we learn from the life of an imam and personally as Salam

[20:50]let's begin by examining the first factor Allah subhana WA Ta'ala has

[20:55]created the human being from flesh and soul we have two dimensions

[21:02]we have the physical dimension and we have the spiritual intellectual dimension

[21:10]most human beings become excessively attached to this materialistic world it's a

[21:15]lifelong struggle that we all have we become attached to superficial things

[21:25]in our lives to temporary things that do not last it is

[21:31]a very difficult trial for the human being but Allah subhana WA

[21:35]Ta'ala reminds us in the holy quran you human being I have

[21:41]created you in dignity and honor well at karramna bani adam' i've

[21:45]given you a great status you the human being you're greater than

[21:52]the universe than the mountains than the heavens than the earth where

[21:55]does a life indicate that in the holy quran allah subhanaw taala

[21:59]states in the holy quran in arizona a man to alice' Marathi

[22:06]one out of the well Jabari for a Boehner a Yamaha wash

[22:09]rockin Amin huh Allah says we have offered the heavy trust the

[22:14]amana on the heavens on the earth on these great mountains but

[22:19]they could not carry it they could not handle it who was

[22:35]is that capacity the intellect all I gave you the intellect through

[22:38]the intellect you can see right from wrong you can appreciate the

[22:42]greatness of allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala you can do goodness out of your

[22:46]own free will by virtue of having the intellect we carried that

[22:50]trust that amana that allah gave us however what did the human

[22:58]being do for hamana hell in sun but the human being did

[23:02]he do justice he did not do justice the human being did

[23:09]not do justice to this amana innahu kana voluma and jonah he

[23:13]oppressed the status that Allah gave him why because he allowed his

[23:20]heart and mind to be severely attached to this materialistic world and

[23:25]therefore he allowed himself to be lower even than the animals sometimes

[23:30]because Allah gave you the intellect the expectation from you is greater

[23:34]but that is the difficulty that we all experience the issue of

[23:39]attachment when you look at the words of psychologists you find that

[23:45]children babies infants as soon as they're born they develop this attachment

[23:53]to objects Jean Piaget the psychologist who worked on child development in

[24:00]his book in 1932 he observed that babies infants you find them

[24:06]becoming jealous over objects they're jealous if they see another baby having

[24:11]an object and sometimes they rage when an item when a toy

[24:18]is taken away from them therefore children early on in their lives

[24:23]develop attachments to their surroundings to material objects now when kids become

[24:31]two years old they now have a sense of ownership Ione it

[24:35]becomes part of me have you seen kids sometimes if you take

[24:39]away something from them it's as if you took their heart this

[24:42]is if you took their life because they get attached to their

[24:47]surroundings now when children become six years old they experience what is

[24:57]called the endowment effect the endowment effect is basically the idea that

[25:03]if something is mine I own it it becomes more important than

[25:06]anything else just because you own it see that attachment that level

[25:12]of attachment and we all experience this by the way you have

[25:16]a car at 2019 Toyota and there are thousands of other Toyota's

[25:21]out there in society why is it that your car is special

[25:26]to you there are many cars like it why is this one

[25:28]special because you own it it's mine right it's just an object

[25:34]like thousands of other objects but you have a special relationship with

[25:38]this object this is the endowment effect kids as early as six

[25:42]years they experienced that and you also find that kids have special

[25:50]items that they're attached to have you seen this in your siblings

[25:53]or have your parents told you about your own stories when you

[25:56]were growing up like a favorite toy a blanket something that's a

[26:00]favorite object that you could not part with it became part of

[26:07]your own self interestingly there's a neurological component to this there's a

[26:14]part of the brain it's called the medial prefrontal cortex this part

[26:19]of the brain this cortex studies have shown that when you see

[26:24]an object that belongs to you there is greater neural activity in

[26:30]this part of the brain two objects are put in front of

[26:34]you right one of them has your name on it my name

[26:36]is on this object I look at it there is increased activity

[26:40]in my brain and then you look at another object that has

[26:44]someone else's name on it you don't see that much activity there

[26:48]biological neural component to it and that shows you how difficult this

[26:57]trial is you may be wondering but why are we created that

[27:00]way even our neurons the structure of our brain pushes us to

[27:06]be attached yes that's trial allah subhanaw taala puts you in this

[27:10]physical world Allah says I've given you the tools get out of

[27:13]this state break this attachment can you then you're an honorable human

[27:17]being who deserves that eternal reward from allah subhanaw taala it's not

[27:24]easy and then once the child keeps growing up we become teenagers

[27:28]now we find objects in our life in order to express ourselves

[27:34]and we develop an identity around these objects for a lot of

[27:40]teenagers or people in their young 20s especially the brothers what do

[27:45]you buy that first car how do you feel about that car

[27:48]that car becomes an extension of your own identity right that's why

[27:53]you personalize it you customize it why do people customize the cars

[27:58]believe me when the company is selling you a car they're selling

[28:00]it in a good state you don't need to play around with

[28:06]the muffler's with the tires with all these aspects of the car

[28:09]they're coming in perfect condition from the company no I want to

[28:13]customize it to express myself because this object now is a part

[28:19]of me I am attached to this object this is very natural

[28:22]we all go through this and then once you become an adult

[28:27]once you become an adult and you have your own house your

[28:29]own business you find that attachment in that house in that business

[28:33]that's why some people when they lose these objects it's as if

[28:40]their life has been taken away from them in 2009 this Japanese

[28:44]kid his mother took his toy and she threw it in the

[28:51]bin you know what he did this teenager he burned down the

[28:53]house he burned down the house so when the reporters asked it

[28:56]asked him what in the world was going on in your mind

[29:00]why did you burn down this house he's like when my mom

[29:05]threw that toy that object I felt as if I died that

[29:07]was that was the end for me so I wanted to burn

[29:10]down this house because I can't live in this house anymore people

[29:13]feel a sense of loss after Hurricane sandy that struck the US

[29:19]East Coast a few years ago if you remember some homes were

[29:22]demolished if you remember the reporters conducting interviews with those people whose

[29:30]homes were devastated some of them were in tears some of them

[29:34]were in shock they're like there goes my life hey baby what

[29:39]do you mean your life your life is summarized in a house

[29:43]and walls and bricks but that's how people felt my life is

[29:46]gone that's it I don't have anything anymore I feel as if

[29:50]I don't have anything in this world anymore you see that attachment

[29:54]the attachment my dear brothers and sisters becomes very severe sometimes now

[30:00]what even complicates things in our digital era the era of social

[30:06]media is that we're constantly coming up with new things to attach

[30:14]to it's not only now that you're attached to objects it's not

[30:18]only that you're now attached to your accounts to your posts to

[30:23]your facebook profile to the profile picture that you put right how

[30:30]many times do you go through your photos searching for that right

[30:33]photo to put on your profile and then you look at it

[30:38]you adjust it you use all these crazy apps to give you

[30:40]that better image that better tone that better color that better shading

[30:45]and you keep looking at it 10 20 30 50 times a

[30:48]day I know some people they look at their profile picture a

[30:51]hundred times a day because we're attached to our own images to

[30:57]our own face and then you have this whole world of selfie

[31:00]obsessions along with let's not get started with that we're attached it's

[31:05]normal its natural because we human beings we love ourselves and everything

[31:09]that has to do with us so we're constantly trying to project

[31:12]ourselves and a lot of times we're trying to get attention now

[31:18]this is normal natural human behavior this doesn't mean you're a bad

[31:21]person if you experience this but this means that this is part

[31:26]of your struggle you need to work on this you need to

[31:28]do something about this so we find that sometimes this attachment becomes

[31:33]excessive with our gadgets with the tools that we have how many

[31:40]families my dear brothers and sisters suffer especially marital relationships when one

[31:45]of the spouses or both of them are extremely addicted to their

[31:50]gadgets to their phones how many families have been broken up because

[31:54]of that the husband doesn't pay attention to his wife to his

[31:57]kids when he comes home the five hours that he has in

[32:03]the evening he's stuck on his gadgets on his phone on social

[32:08]media doing whatever he's doing the same happens to the wife sometimes

[32:12]she neglects her responsibilities because she's obsessed with social media and her

[32:15]gadgets the attachment sometimes becomes extremely severe and if you really want

[32:21]to know how a person is attached to these items keep that

[32:27]item away from this person a few minutes don't try this there's

[32:30]gonna be a fight at home but you get the idea keep

[32:34]it away from this person tell this person let's go into a

[32:37]room put the phone outside for two hours for thirty minutes you

[32:42]see this person he's sitting on the couch he's getting edgy he

[32:45]can't concentrate you can't talk to you anymore his mind is in

[32:48]his phone that is a sign that the attachment has become too

[32:52]severe you need to do something about it normal levels of attachment

[32:57]are okay you can be functional but sometimes excessive attachment makes you

[33:04]a dysfunctional human being this is our lifelong struggle my dear brothers

[33:11]and sisters being attached to this world to material objects comes with

[33:18]consequences for us in our lives many consequences my dear brothers and

[33:22]sisters one consequence of being attached to material objects is that it

[33:27]impacts your self-worth la has told you that I have created you

[33:32]with honor and dignity when you become attached to these objects these

[33:40]objects become an extension of yourself that means you're equating yourself with

[33:46]an object it's that the self-worth that Allah subhana WA Ta'ala has

[33:50]given you and has wanted for you my dear brothers and sisters

[33:53]anytime this turns into an obsession Allah is reminding you wake up

[33:57]your much greater than that your greater than the heavens and the

[34:02]earth and the mountains don't forget that I gave you an Amana

[34:05]don't allow yourself to be equated to an object and you need

[34:13]self force from an object there are some youth or some people

[34:16]who are obsessed with brand-name clothes right it's ok it's ok to

[34:21]wear good clothes expensive clothes alhamdulillah thank Allah for the blessings that

[34:26]he's given you some people wear that they're thankful to Allah yes

[34:29]they like to be presentable they like to wear good clothes it's

[34:35]fine but some people they are looking for their self-worth in these

[34:39]clothes when they wear these clothes they feel good about themselves that's

[34:44]wrong Allah subhana wa ta'ala is reminding you you the human being

[34:48]I've given you this honor and Kurama you need a piece of

[34:50]cloth that's probably made in China or Taiwan it's not worth really

[34:56]more than 5 bucks but because it has that brand name on

[34:58]it it becomes a hundred bucks you need that to feel good

[35:03]about yourself I've made you greater than the earth and the mountains

[35:05]and the universe you need a piece of cloth to feel good

[35:11]about yourself you see the consequence of severe attachment to material objects

[35:14]Allah says rise you're much greater than that wear it fine but

[35:20]don't be attached to it don't give your heart to it your

[35:25]heart is very special keep it for something that's worth it so

[35:28]this is one consequence my dear brothers and sisters that we find

[35:32]with this severe type of attachment another consequence that we find with

[35:38]this type of attachment is that it leads to depression you know

[35:42]one cause of depression depression has many causes many factors that contribute

[35:47]to depression but one major cause of depression is attachment to material

[35:53]objects that's why here in America the richest nation on earth it's

[35:58]the richest country in the world right but there are 60 million

[36:04]Americans who suffer from chronic depression 60 million Americans that's 20% of

[36:10]the population why what's the reason it's because of this attachment we

[36:14]live in a very materialistic society even our holidays are centered around

[36:21]materialism right next thing you know halloween is coming up go shop

[36:24]and spend and then Thanksgiving is coming up and then Black Friday

[36:27]and then Christmas and then Valentine's and then you see our economy

[36:31]is based on consumers and buy buy buy and feel good about

[36:36]yourself go to the mall buy and feel good about yourself this

[36:40]leads to a number of consequences one of them is depression one

[36:46]of them is low self-esteem in fact one study was done on

[36:50]teenagers to examine what impacts their self-esteem and they realized that those

[36:57]teenagers who gave value to material objects they had low self-esteem and

[37:02]those teenagers who found value in something that wasn't material in their

[37:10]family and their values in their religion they had much greater self-esteem

[37:16]materialism attacks us at our self-esteem and a lot constantly remind us

[37:22]one about calumny Benny Adam I've given you honor I've given you

[37:25]dignity so we find that these are some consequences when it comes

[37:31]to materialism now what is the solution my dear brothers and sisters

[37:35]I'm such a knight what take away points do we take from

[37:37]the legacy of an imam and four same Sun I want to

[37:42]lie on e the first solution the first step towards tackling this

[37:47]problem of attachment is to remember that allah subhana wa ta'ala is

[37:52]the owner of everything you're not the owner remember that endowment effect

[38:00]we talked about when something belongs to you it has your name

[38:03]on it you react differently to it you're attached to it it

[38:06]becomes special a true believer who's focused in this life realizes that

[38:11]everything around him his name is not on it he doesn't own

[38:16]it yes your name can be on that deed of the house

[38:20]on that business that car may be registered in your name but

[38:24]it's not yours listen to what allah subhanaw taala states in surah

[38:29]anaam bismillah ar-rahman ar-rahim allah is talking about the day of judgment

[38:33]when we go back to him how do you go back to

[38:39]Allah subhana WA Ta'ala Allah says what a two moon for a

[38:45]duh come on up and I come I wanna morrow Allah says

[38:48]you shall come back single without anyone just as you were created

[38:54]in this world you came lonely not owning anything that's exactly how

[38:59]you go back to allah subhanho wa taala then allah subhanho wa

[39:05]taala states what i rectum maha well now come wha allure come

[39:09]and you have left everything behind you know how a life describes

[39:17]your belongings alas us how well not come what we loaned you

[39:20]what we lent you allah says everything you own in this world

[39:23]you're borrowing it it's not yours don't let that endowment effect to

[39:29]influence you my dear brothers and sisters it's not yours remind yourself

[39:34]believe me this is effective when you're going to your business tell

[39:38]yourself this business is not mine this car is not mine this

[39:41]gadget is not mine I'm borrowing it from allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala the

[39:48]attachment it allows you to be stronger it develops yourself and it

[39:54]gives you that spiritual and intellectual insight you own an amount of

[39:59]cash in your bank it's just a number it's just a number

[40:03]that you have in the bank what do you really own in

[40:07]this life if you really want to know what you own realize

[40:10]the day that you leave the world what will you take with

[40:13]you if you're not going to take it you don't own it

[40:15]it's a 70 year loan right when you seek a mortgage on

[40:20]your house you pay that mortgage for 30 years you don't really

[40:24]own the house the bank owns it once you fully pay it

[40:28]off it's completely yours everything you have in this life is a

[40:31]70 year old loan 50 year old loan that's it nothing more

[40:36]than that constantly reminding yourself of this is extremely important to my

[40:39]dear brothers and sisters that's the first step the second step it's

[40:46]very helpful to always remind ourselves that the only way to eternalize

[40:53]yourself to immortalize yourself is to be with allah subhanahu wa'ta'ala one

[40:58]of the names of allah subhanaw taala is a labaki what does

[41:02]el bakry mean the only being that stays everything else will not

[41:09]stay everything else you will have to depart if you're attached to

[41:13]something in this life my dear brothers and sisters remind yourself that

[41:16]you have to give it up one day Imam Ali ibn ABI

[41:20]Talib Adi Salaam beautifully describes this an agile baraja once the Imam

[41:24]Mahdi's salam went to the cemetery the imam addressed the people the

[41:28]graves look at the words of Ameer al-mumineen yeah and i let

[41:50]homes of these empty homes of these dark homes the graves yes

[41:55]their mom calls them homes why because they will be our homes

[41:58]in fact it's the home that you'll spend the most time in

[42:04]your lifetime in your spiritual life time then the Imam Mahdi's salam
