Transcript:
It has been narrated from the Holy Prophet (S) that every day for half an hour, an hour, 10 minutes, or 5 minutes, a human being should be alone with themselves. He should take account of himself and assess himself [by asking] what have I done in these 24 hours? Where are the earnings of my works? This 24 hours is my life.

Sometimes you see that at the end of their life, a person hopes to be alive for just one moment- to breath, to speak, to do dhikr. All of us are responsible for a few moments every day to take account [of ourselves and ask]: I have passed 24 hours of my life, what did I earn?

The greats mention a parable. They say that a farmer tried and put forth effort- he plowed, took care of the seeds, fields, irrigation, and everything else. Now, after 40 years, he visited the storeroom. He said, “The wheat that I stored and saved for 40 years in this storeroom, where did it go??” When he opened the door of the storeroom, he sees that there is nothing in there.

He must understand that a thievish rat was in this storeroom and took everything. Because the key was in his hands, and he locked the door. And he regularly poured earnings into this storeroom for forty years. No one came from the outside to take it. It turns out that there was a problem from inside! This thievish rat is our [illegitimate] desires and whims. In the words of Mawlawi [Rumi], “If there is no thievish rat in
our storeroom, then where is the wheat of forty years’ works?”

The blessed Prophet (S) said that don’t let it be 40 years, don’t let it be 40 months, don’t let it be 40 weeks, don’t let it be 40 days…every day! For five or six minutes, more or less, take account and ask yourself that I have passed 24 hours, what did I earn? If at so-and-so place they praised me and I liked it, then it becomes clear that [what I did] was for my own self. Or at so-and-so place I did a bit of work and they gave me something small, so then it was for money. What was for God’s satisfaction? How did I help solve people’s problems? What did I do for others? Every day, we are responsible for taking this account.
