What happened to Hadith after the demise of the Prophet (s)? There was a ban of recording hadith for approximately 100 years after the demise of the Prophet (s). According to Sunni books, the first and second caliphs burnt many hadith they had recorded, supposedly because they did not want people to be busy with hadith and forget the Quran. As a result, people who documented the hadith of the Prophet at later times did not have many reliable sources. They mainly depended on oral transmissions, allowing fabrications to occur. Reasons why the Umayyads had defamed the Prophet (s):
•Muawiya and Yazid harboured resentment towards the Prophet (s) because he had brought forth a new religion, due to which they lost their forefathers in battles such as the Battle of Badr.
•Power: they had power in Makkah and controlled society. When Islam was revealed, they did not like the fact that the Prophet (s) had changed the systematics of society, and therefore resented him for this as well. •Justification for their own actions: If the infallibility of the Prophet (s) and the fact that he never made mistakes was clearly transmitted through hadith, this would discolour the image of Yazid and Muawiya, as the actions they would commit would go against the teachings of the Prophet, making them appear as though they are unqualified to sit on the pulpit of khilafa. By making it out to be that the Prophet committed sins or mistakes, it could be used as a justification for their own actions.
